The aim for the work in WP3 (the text from the application):
VIRCLASS has already made a Virtual Book (A K. Larsen, 2006) including electronic learning material for the already existing modules. These learning materials, from students’ evaluations, have turned out a success and made the studies more interesting and interactive (Larsen et al, 2007 available in Seminar.net: Volume 3 - issue 3 - 2007 - seminar.net). When developing a new module in community work the new material will be in line with the already existing. This means developing and producing new screen lectures, triggers and video case for community work. Besides this additional functions (like f.i. online community) will be introduced to realize a real Virtual Campus.
The first virtual book was designed and produced by the Media Centre at HiB in cooperation with all partners who delivered the material.
For the new modules we want to exploit the expertise of the Media Centre in Bergen to the other partner institutions. For this reason the production of the new learning material will be a joint venture inviting media staff/educational technologists from different partner institution to a staff training course in Bergen during spring 2009. As a result of this the next virtual book will be a co-production of the media centres within the partner institutions, coordinated and edited by the Media Centre at HiB. Besides the training WP3 working group will meet once to prepare the material for a video case and triggers (see travelling and subsistence sheet).
Deliverable 3.1 Course for media staff for developing virtual learning material
The content of this course is to upgrade the competences of technical and media staff in producing and designing new audio virtual learning material, and to share the partners’ competences and expertise in this field. Training course will run for 5 days. As a start a specific number of partners will be involved (INHOLLAND, UCM, HHJ, HSM, LPA, KHKEMPEN)
Deliverable 3.2 Virtual learning material
Virtual book will consist of 6 short screen lectures, 10 visual and audiovisual triggers, 1 video based community case. The recording will be done at different campuses. The new material will be learning resources for the new module in Community work and Community development and will be available at the www.virclass.net/student.
All 9 partners involved in this deliverable will meet once in Madrid 25-27 May 2009 to develop the case.
Partners, budget and reimbursement
In the application HiB and the following six institutions are involved in the deliverable 3.1: INHOLLAND, UCM, HHJ, HSM, LPA, KHKEMPEN.
According to the budget in the application daily subsistence including accommodation and meals will be covered. Travel costs up to 500 Euro will be reimbursed for one media/technical staff from these six partner institutions.
After the kick-off meeting in Bergen we have been thinking that to make this workshop as fruitful as possible not only technical/media staff should participate, but also academic staff should have the possibility to join the workshop.
However there will not be any financial support for this in the project. Our suggestion is that academic staff applies for teacher exchange grants and if more than one media/technical staff would participate from the same institution, staff exchange money might be applied for.
The price for a single room at the Bergen Travel hotel is 515 NOK including breakfast. There is no fee for the course.
Other partners in addition to the ones mentioned above are expected to participate in delivering ideas and to contribute in different way to the deliverable 3.2. These are: ISMT, SWANSEA, HIBO. If some from these partner institutions want to participate in this workshop they can apply for participation if they can find financial support for this.
As you understand the production of the deliverable 3.1 and 3.2 are closely related, but it is also closely related to the WP2 and the development of the new Curriculum for Community Work/Community Development. We therefore recommend the participants in the workshop – technical/media staff as well as academic staff - to cooperate in finding good and creative ideas for triggers, lectures and later the case we are going to produce.
Time table for production
We hope that the themes for the screen lectures will be ready during the WP2 meeting in February, and that some of the lectures can be produced during the workshop in Bergen in March.
Before and during the workshop in Bergen we aim to sort out the 10 triggers that need to be produced. The production should be finished before the next WP3 meeting in May in Madrid, but with some time for adjustments during the next month.
In Madrid we will look at the triggers produced, but the main focus for the meeting in May is production of the content for the case. The recording and final production of the case will then be done during summer and finished in the autumn 2009. The whole production of digital learning material should be finished by the end of November 2009. See the timetable for WP3: http://vircamp.net/ep_tmp/files/1746447826494f85fd14e3b.xls
(Notice that this might be adjusted during the process)
WORKSHOP IN BERGEN
Course for media staff for developing virtual learning material
16 – 20 of March 2009
The Media Centre at HiB has the pleasure to invite you to our workshop here in Bergen in March 2009.
Our focus will be on the development and production of audiovisual «triggers» and screen lectures for SW-VirCamp settings. At the workshop in Bergen we will draw upon the broad experience of our Media Centre here at Bergen University College. Among other things, the Media Centre specializes in the development and production of audiovisual material for educational purposes. We are responsible for the VirClass productions of «triggers», screen lectures and a video case. During our week together in March, we will share with you some experiences, tips and «tricks» from this field.
There are different ways to support learning and creative processes. Pictures, recorded voices and music represent useful tools that may trigger and inspire students in their work.
Workshop
What does it take to produce audiovisual material for virtual classrooms like the ones we want to develop in SW-VirCamp? How to develop audiovisual learning material that triggers learning in e-learning?
Through the workshop in March we will focus on these questions and sort this out together with you. In Bergen we will address the subjects mentioned below. There will be lectures, discussions and brain storming sessions. But first of all there will be production. We will create a creative environment where participants get to make their own triggers. Some will also be involved in the making of screen lectures.
Transformation of content
The development of audiovisual learning materials requires a whole range of different expertise from curriculum development to technical expertise. At the workshop in Bergen, we gather both academics and media producers to achieve an understanding of each other’s fields. Our challenge will then be to build models of co operations to emulate the transformation of social work content into web based learning materials.
Screen lectures
Lecturers tend to feel that screen lecturing is restricting and limiting. We want to focus on how the screen medium opens up a whole range of new possibilities.
Triggers
Triggers are audiovisual inputs to start flows of thoughts and ideas. Triggers may be useful when it comes to understanding a problem or a set of conditions, or when it comes to finding creative solutions to a given problem. Triggers can also be used as metaphors and start reflections on themes and theoretical concepts.
Production planning
Producing audiovisual material is indeed a creative process, and one needs to find room for unconventional ideas and imagination. But production also takes careful planning, to meet both technical and time related restrictions.
What this course is not about
Notice that this course is neither about how to use synchronic and asynchronic communication tools, nor about digital assessments and examinations. That will be part of the e-pedagogy course set up by VIRCLASS.
A challenge for you
We promised you a practical task in your preparation for the workshop in March. Here it is:
· Have a look at the triggers in The Virtual Book, The Guide to Social Work in Europe http://virclass.net/virtualbook. You get access by the username: module1 and the password: virbook. You will be able to see the triggers and lectures in Module1 as well as in Module 2. (The case in Module 2 is not made available to you at the moment).
· Exercise 1:
Prepare for the production of an audiovisual trigger that will stimulate students' discussion and reflection on "user participation" in relation to the Community Work module. Make notes that you will present when we meet in March.
To work on this task we strongly recommend collaboration between academic staff (project contact) and technical/media staff.
We suggest that you use the two forms you have received and fill these in when working on the task.
· The simplified planning form for audiovisual productions (the excel file) (see attachment)
· The form making trigger for the educational programme in SW-VirCamp (see attachment).
To give you an idea about how we have been working when producing triggers in the VIRCLASS we include the form we used for that purpose as well.
If you have other ideas for triggers please bring these with you to Bergen for discussions, and/or present this in the google doc you have been invited to participate in. The address to this is: http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=dcfcrhn5_15fxrnb2vr&hl=en_GB
A more detailed programme will be sent to the partners in the end of January. However the course will start on Monday the 16 March at 09:00 and will end around 16:00 on Friday the 20 March.
If you did not yet fill in the survey – where we ask for information about your experience with production or using virtual learning material and your expectation for this course, please copy this address in to your internet browser and answer the questions: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=p1KL_K_DenbBthjyhg-yNGQ
